Riverwest DEA Update

We just got an update on the status of the Riverwest Dog Park. There has been a hold up with the land contract between the county and Johnson Controls with regards to language related to who will hold the liability. The county just sent back a final revised contact for JC to review. They hope things will move forward and JC will agree to their changes to the contract. Hopefully we’ll know more in a couple of weeks.
If it does move foward, the soonest a new dog park would open on that site would be Aug/Sept due to all the work to remediate the soil. We are told the bad soil would need to be removed, layer of clay would need to do down, then new soil brought in, and then finally, seed would go it. It takes a few weeks from seeding before the site could handle the traffic of a dog park.
ROMP will keep on following up every couple of weeks to see where things are at. If we get told it’s a “no go” due to the liability issues, we’ll share that as well.
The Parks Dept is still looking at another site to open in 2011 on the southwest side of the county. Everything is in a holding pattern due to elections not only on the county exec level but for local municipalities. Once the parks dept knows who all the players are, they can revisit the sites and plans with those elected officials and get sign off.

Spring has sprung

It is Spring and people will start using the dog parks more and more. Recovering from winter and preparing for Spring means a few things at the dog parks.

  • Make sure you are compliant and have purchased your permit. The permits are for calendar year so the earlier you but the more usage and worth you get from it. http://county.milwaukee.gov/Dogs9203/DogExerciseAreas/DEAPermitLocations.htm
  • The dog parks, like all parks, are natural areas. That means with the snow melting there will be mud. Be prepared. If you notice excessive areas that may need closing off to recuperate or even reseeding let us know, but let’s hope warm weather, rain, and sun will take care of most of it.
  • Melting snow can and will reveal the deeds of dogs from winter. Please as you see it pick it up. We are also trying to organize Spring cleanups for Earth Day just as many other parks are. If you are interested e-mail info@milwaukeedogparks.org or call 414,769.8806.

As dog owners and users of the parks we all need to have gratitude and pride that we have the ones we have, or we may not get more. Please do the right thing and help keep the parks clean for all.

DEA Hours of Operation Change

As of Jan. 15, 2011, the DEAs will be open 5 a.m.–10 p.m. Typically the county’s said hours are from dawn to dusk but during the months where daylight is so short, it makes it hard for some people to use the parks, especially in the morning before the head to work. A big “thank you” to Mary, a regular early AM Runway DEA usesr for raising this issue! Her follow-up go the ordinance changed. Also thanks to Milwaukee County Sheriff Clarke and Milwaukee County Parks Director, Sue Black, for being so responsive to making this change.
